Bout Summary
Jose Luis Esteven was rough and crude - he came to fight with conviction. The bout was competitive for the first 3 rounds until Esteven tired. In the 4th round Esteven was countered and hurt by Toney's infamous "counter right." He then stood on the receiving end of a half dozen follow up power shots, losing his mouthpiece in the process. The 5th round brought more of the same, with Toney landing a hard right that hurt Esteven, then following up with a combination of clean power shots forcing the referee to wave off the fight with Esteven still on his feet.
Comments
- Esteven received a warning for an intentional headbutt in round 1.
- Esteven refuses to touch Toney's glove when round 1 came to an end, yanking his glove away in a gesture of defiance.
