Brooklyn Eagle, April 18, 1891:
“Australian files received by the steamer Monowai give long accounts of the featherweight fight between Griffo and Powell, in Sydney, on March 12. The meeting created great interest, and when the men shook hands in the ring there was an immense assemblage present. The betting had been 6 to 4 on Griffo. Powell was not as strong as he might have been, through having trained down too fine. Griffo scaled 119 pounds and his opponent was half a pound lighter. Powell did more fighting than any other man has ever done with Griffo, but there was no vim in his blows, and in the nineteenth round he was pitiably weak and in such evident pain that the referee stopped the unequal struggle and awarded the fight to Griffo, who must have knocked his plucky opponent out in another round. Griffo will probably visit America soon.”
