"Earnie Shavers had the reputation for punching power but found himself on the other end of a right hand wallop as Bob Stallings hammered him to the canvas in the 9th round and went on to post a unanimous 10 round decision in their heavyweight bout. Stallings, of Freeport, NY, earned the decision on all three cards by a 6-4 count. Shavers, of Warren, Ohio, went into the fight at MSG's Felt Forum with a history of knockout victories. But it was not to be Monday night as Shavers seemed confused by Stallings' constant movement. Stallings took the fight to Shavers, who was forced to counter-punch, a tactic that had him missing numerous punches. Shavers did shake up stallings in the 7th round with hooks to the body and head. But it didn't take the steam out of his unheralded rival, who came back two rounds later to score the fight's only knockdown and take complete command of the match." -Associated Press
