"Turkey Thompson of Los Angeles, hailed as a comer in heavyweight boxing circles, made his eastern debut a successful one tonight winning a 10-round split decision over the veteran Gus Dorazio of Philadelphia at the Arena. Except for the 4th round when Dorazio went down and for bits of action in the 3rd, 9th and 10th rounds, the two fought mostly at close quarters. In the 4th Gus had Thompson backed into a corner. He slipped home a hard left to the body from his crouching position, but as he backed away, he straightened up and Thompson promptly whipped over a hard right to the chin. Gus staggered, then sagged to the canvas. At the count of three he got to one knee and deliberately took the nine-count. That was the only time Thompson put the Philadelphian down. Dorazio came back concentrating on a body attack that slowed Thompson up. When the decision was announced many in the crowd booed." -Associated Press
