"Local junior welterweight Loreto Garza won the biggest fight of his career, whipping Frankie Warren over 12 rounds for the USBA junior welterweight championship. Garza fought the last five rounds against Warren with a closed right eye. Despite the hideous-looking injury the lanky Garza kept the squat Warren under control with jabs and straight rights. Garza wobbled Warren in the 5th, 9tth and 10th rounds, but couldn't floor the stubborn Texan. Warren's trainer, Lou Duva, tried to rattle Garza during the fight, calling him 'gutless' and urging him to 'stop running and fight like a man.' But Garza kept his cool and stuck with his plan of keeping Warren at bay with jabs." -Ring Magazine, January 1990 issue
- Unofficial Ring Magazine scorecard - 117-111 Garza
- This was Warren's last fight, as he suffered a detached retina in his right eye and was advised by the medical field to retire, and he did so.
- Garza had a title shot tentatively set up with Juan Coggi for the Arco Arena on December 2, 1989. However, it would be just over a year from the date of the Warren fight before the two would meet and the venue would be in France.
