- The buildup was in many ways similar to the first Ali-Liston fight. Benn had just come off a first-round kayo of then-fearsome Iran Barkley, while Eubank had fought nobody of note and his mouth had both irritated and endeared him to the fans. Few people gave him a chance. Eubank's constant pressure and surprisingly hard punching, combined with his unusual style, slowly but surely wore Benn down, as Michael Watson had done 18 months earlier. Benn was resigned and respectful in defeat, saying 'whatever I may think of Chris Eubank, I have nothing but respect for the way he worked tonight'. This fight marked the beginning of the great era for British middleweights and super middleweights, with the two fighters sharing a then-unheard-of GBP250,000.
