  • Referee: Frank Cappuccino

"Stanley 'Kitten' Hayward unloaded a bruising right to the jaw and went on to stop Pete Toro at 1:08 of the 9th round of their 10-round welterweight fight Thursday night. Hayward, 149, of Philadelphia, drove Toro to the canvas with a stunning right, then batted the New Yorker around the Convention Hall ring until referee Frank Cappuccino stopped the fight. Toro, 148, started out winging in the 1st round when he dropped Hayward to the canvas with a solid right to the jaw. The fighters matched blows until the 5th round when Hayward belted Toro with a flurry of punches and took command in the bout. After Hayward dropped Toro to the canvas, the New Yorker took the mandatory eight-count and bounced up to take continuous body and head punishment. Referee Cappuccino stepped between the fighters to stop the bout when he saw that Toro was almost defenseless." -Associated Press
