Stanley Hayward 147 lbs lost to Jose Stable 147 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Jose Stable of Cuba, master of the bob and weave, moved toward a title fight Saturday night by winning a unanimous decision over Stanley (Kitten) Hayward of Philadelphia. Stable outsped Hayward in the crucial exchanges of their nationally televised 10 rounder at MSG and had him bleeding from the left eye-corner and from the nose at the finish. A crowd of 1,500 witnessed an excellent fight in which the harder-hitting Hayward was trying for a quick knockout in the early rounds but tired in the later going. There were no knockdowns, but unexpectedly, Stable finished the last round on rubber legs. About 10 seconds to go before the bell he was nailed with a left hook to the chin that buckled his knees, then a right-left-right knocked him sideways in a stagger but he did not go down." -United Press International

  • Unofficial UPI scorecard - 5-3-2 Stable
  • Garden matchmaker Teddy Brenner stated after the bout that he was so impressed with Stable that he would try to arrange a match with world champion Emile Griffith for either September or October. Brenner did deliver the fight, but not until '65.
