"Jose Gonzalez, a whirling dervish puncher from Puerto Rico, handed Joey Archer his first loss in 31 bouts by winning a split, 10 round decision over the NY middleweight Saturday night at MSG. There were no knockdowns, but by the final bell plenty of blood had been spilled around the ring - most of it by Archer. He started bleeding from the nose in the 1st round. Later, cuts opened over both eyes. In the final round, Archer opened a gash over Gonzalez' left eye. Archer could not effectively counter Gonzalez' rushing tactics." -Associated Press
