"Miguel Berrios' upset loss to Gil Cadilli added further confusion today to boxing's unsettled featherweight division. Cadilli beat Berrios, the 2nd-rated featherweight contender, on a split decision in a nationally televised 10-round bout last night. Berrios, 126 1/4, of New York, had hoped to move immediately into a bout with the No. 1 featherweight contender, Cherif Hamia of Algeria. It was a dull, dreary contest most of the way with Cadilli, 127 1/2, of San Francisco, apparently winning on his jabs and his elusiveness. Berrios lost much of his lustre in the slow contest." -Associated Press
- Shortly before this bout the NBA stripped Sandy Saddler of his featherweight title due to failure to defend. Less than a week later Saddler retired due to a detached retina suffered in a previous accident.
Post-fight comment
- "The NBA action will stick, but I don't think the public wants to accept a fighter who has not beaten the champion. The NBA move should shock Saddler into making a quick defense and thus get back into good graces." -Sid Flaherty, Cadilli's manager.
