"James J. Parker was saved from defeat Friday night only by the last minute flooring of light heavyweight Jimmy Slade in St. Nicholas Arena. At that, he won by the eyelash margin of a single point. Loud, persistent booing from the 1,200 fans greeted the verdict at the close of the nationally televised and broadcast bout. Slade seemed to have the fight wrapped up at the end of the 9th round. He gashed Parker's left brow in the 1st round and thereafter dished out more punishment with his swarming, rapid-fire counterattack than he received from the awkward giant's long rights to the kidneys and head. He had Parker floundering in the 8th and 9th sessions." -United Press
