"Fernando Cabanela of Manila, the No. 1 flyweight contender, defeated Halimi Gutierrez of Mexico City, the No. 4 challenger, by a unanimous 12 round decision. The victory may have earned the Filipino a match with Masao Ohba, the WBA champion from Tokyo. Each fighter weighed 112. Cabanela finished strong with his long left and effective right hand punches. But Gutierrez was credited with the only knockdown. It came in the 5th and it appeared Cabanela was pushed rather than knocked off balance. Even Gutierrez was laughing at the knockdown decision." -Pasadena Star-News
