"Australian middleweight Tony Mundine tonight scored a 5th round victory over American boxer Nate Collins at Brisbane Festival Hall. Referee Des Crabbe stopped the fight because Collins' left eye was almost closed as a result of repeated jabs to the head from the Australian. Mundine was in command throughout, except in the 2nd round when the lanky Collins caught him with a left hook." -Reuters
- Despite having the world title fight signed with Carlos Monzon for October, Mundine's trainer, Ern McQuillin, claimed he was attempting to squeeze in a Commonwealth title defense against Kevin Finnegan in the two month interim. A bout which did not materialize.
