Lothar Stengel 174 lbs lost to Tom Bogs 169 lbs by TKO at 2:42 in round 1 of 15

12,000 spectators went amok in the open air arena Idraetsparken in Copenhagen when Danish contender Tom Bogs won the European Light heavyweight Title by knocking out the German champion Lothar Stengel after 2:35 of the first round. A series of left and right hooks floored the German three times. Stengel never had a chance to get into any kind of rhythm.

In a carefully planned publicity stunt, the young promotor Mogens Palle had placed Denmark's 4 previous European champions ringside. They were Knud Larsen, Jorgen Johansen, Christian Christensen, and Borge Krogh. Tom Bogs became the country's 5th European champ.

Spanish referee Fernando Perotti told the reporters of Politiken, that he was amazed by the fiery attack from the 23-year old contender. Perotti was equally amazed, of how European champion Stengel allowed himself to be bombed out this way, saying "One must expect more than that from a champion."
