"Manuel Gonzalez, the young Odessa welterweight, took a unanimous 10 round decision over Joe Brown, former lightweight champion of the world Thursday night. The 38 year old Brown, who lost the title in 1962, had visions of a comeback and had planned to use Gonzalez as a stepping stone to a championship fight. But his hopes were dimmed when he couldn't come close to handling the Odessa fighter. Gonzalez used a sharp left jab and superior speed to keep Brown and his lethal right hand at long range." -Associated Press
