Flash Elorde 130 lbs beat Kang Il Suh 130 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15

"Flash Elorde of the Philippines, dominated youthful Kang Il Suh all the way despite a bothersome eye cut and retained his world junior lightweight championship with a unanimous 15 round decision over the Korean last night. Elorde took command at the start and was never in trouble. Elorde's superior craftmanship was too much for Suh, who tried futilely for a knockout in the final stages as the Filipino was content to coast behind his sizable lead in points. A wildly partisan crowd of 25,000 jammed the Araneta Coliseum and cheered Elorde to victory. Suh opened a cut under the champion's right eye in the opening round and the injury twice was examined by the ring doctor. Elorde was troubled visibly by the cut, particularly in the 15th round when he had to wipe away the blood several times." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 70-68 Elorde
  • Suh was warned three times during the contest for butting and twice it cost him a point.
  • Suh was the first Korean to contest a world title.
