Flash Elorde 130 lbs beat Teruo Kosaka 129 lbs by TKO at 1:45 in round 12 of 15

"World junior lightweight champion Flash Elorde, his title hanging by a thread, rallied Monday night to score a riotous, controversial 12th round TKO over young Teruo Kosaka of Japan. The Filipino southpaw was trailing dangerously on points when he suddenly caught Kosaka with a chopping left, followed by a right cross and a smashing left hook that put Kosaka on the seat of his trunks. He got up, took the mandatory eight-count and stumbled into four punches before Filipino referee Jose Padilla waved him away and raised Elorde's hand at 1:45 of the round. The partisan Japanese crowd that packed the Kuramae Sumo Arena erupted like an explosion. They had watched Kosaka punch sharper and faster than the veteran champion and at least once, in the 10th round, appeared to have Elorde in trouble. The finish in the 12th came with stunning suddenness." -Pacific Stars & Stripes

  • Unofficial Stars & Stripes scorecard (through 11 completed rounds) - 55-46 Kosaka
  • Elorde had to lose 1 3/4 pounds at the morning weigh-in
  • Kosaka was cut over the right eye in the 2nd round
  • Elorde and referee Padilla were both assaulted upon leaving the ring
