"Gabriel (Flash) Elorde dethroned Philippine lightweight champion Leo Alonzo before 8,000 fans at Rizal Coliseum. Elorde, world's 5th ranking featherweight, beat the champion to the punch with a varied attack and had the champion at his mercy throughout the 12 round fight, except the 7th when Alonzo staged a brief but savage rally. There were no knockdowns but Elorde cut Alonzo's left eyebrow in the 8th round and Elorde himself suffered a cut also on his left eyebrow in the 12th round." -United Press
