- Date: 1949-08-31
- Location: Auditorium, Oakland, California, USA
- Referee: Eddie James
- Judge: Johnny Lotsey
- Judge: Dick Burke
"Former lightweight champion Beau Jack hammered away with wild but destructive body blows last night to defeat Johnny Gonsalves, young Oakland fighter, in a fast moving 10-round bout in Oakland Auditorium. It marked the first defeat in 15 pro fights for Gonsalves, the former national amateur champion. Johnny outboxed his opponent in the first two rounds, but Beau got up his steam in the 3rd round and stayed out front for the rest of the bout. Beau, twice holder of the lightweight crown, was not as fast as in his prime but his sharp body blows kept the Oakland lad retreating most of the time. He did, however, at one point, receive a warning from referee Eddie James against kidney punching. A near capacity crowd cheered loudly from the start." -Berkley Daily Gazette
- Referee Eddie James scored the bout in Gonsalves' favor but was overruled by judges John Lotsey and Richard Burke who scored for Jack.
- Jack was already signed prior to this bout to meet Tote Martinez a week later at the Olympic Auditorium and then on to Chicago to meet Kid Gavilan and he kept both dates. Gonsalves, on the other hand, had two fights - one in L.A. and one in Seattle - scrubbed due to a cut eye he received in this bout, which kept him out of action for 8 weeks.
