"Lou Nova of Oakland retained his state heavyweight championship after a strenuous 10 round bout here last night with Lee Ramage of San Diego. A sharper puncher and able to withstand Ramage's best blows, Nova won clearly, but his edge of victory was trimmed by illegal tactics during several stages of the fight. Several times Nova punched low, and in the 7th round he butted Ramage over an eye. Ramage warned him against heeling, and in the mixup that followed, Nova came out with his own eyebrow split open. Both fighters slowed down in the closing rounds, but kept pushing gloves until the final bell." -Associated Press
