"Eddie Machen ran into a surprisingly tough George 'Scrap Iron' Johnson at the Olympic Auditorium Thursday night, but was able to come off with a unanimous decision win in what most ringsiders considered a tuneup bout for a hoped for Machen - Joe Frazier bout in a month. Scrap Iron, sporting an aggressive style that carried the fight to Machen throughout the 10 rounder, gave the crowd plenty to cheer about as he unleashed several punishing blows. But it was Machen's fight all the way, as he turned on dazzling combinations when he felt he needed the points. His speed was too much for the plodding Johnson. A 10th round flurry that had Srap Iron holding on in a neutral corner lasted the full final minute of the fight and had the crowd standing and shouting at the final bell." -Long Beach Press-Telegram
