"Heavyweight Eddie Machen was fined for 'unfair tactics' following his 8th round knockout victory over Dave Bailey in a scheduled 10 rounder Saturday night. Fans booed loudly when Machen, 191 1/2, apparently kneed Bailey in the groin early in the 6th round. The fight was held up six minutes before the 200 pound Philadelphian was ready to continue. Referee Jimmy Olivas ruled a foul, and the round was awarded to Bailey. Machen, who fights out of Berkley, Calif., knocked Bailey down twice in the 8th round, the second time at 2:35. Fans were brought to their feet again when Olivas had to pull Machen away from the prostrate Bailey before starting the final count." -Associated Press

• Machen was fined $100 for his actions during the contest. In announcing the fine, the Nevada State Athletic Commission said Machen had made "a deliberate attempt to seriously jeopardize the chances of his opponent." The ruling noted that the attempt was "not completed, there was no injury to Bailey in the opinion of referee Jimmy Olivas to the commission."
