Mike Quarry 175 lbs lost to Pedro Soto 179 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

"Friday night fights returned to television with a pier six brawl that had Pedro Soto of Puerto Rico outpointing Mike Quarry in a light heavyweight bout. Referee Mills Lane was as busy as the fighters, as frequent low blows and Soto elbows kept him working hard throughout the 10 round bout. Soto, 179 1/2, won a majority decision over Quarry, 175, of Orlando, Fla., in a fight where each boxer was penalized for illegal procedures. Quarry was cut around both eyes and Lane said the one underneath his right eye was probably the result of an elbow. Soto suffered a laceration under his left eye in the 8th. The cuts, however, did not bother either boxer. Quarry went down in the 2nd round from a crisp left hook and that proved the margin of victory for the 20 year old Puerto Rican. Soto clinched the victory in the 9th and 10th rounds with a solid attack to the head, even though both boxers were again guilty of low blows, and, in the final stanza, Soto was warned again to keep his punches up." -Associated Press

  • Lane claimed it was the dirtiest fight he ever worked.
