James Scott 177 lbs beat Richie Kates 176 lbs by TKO at 1:32 in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1979-03-10
  • Location: Rahway State Prison, Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, USA
  • Referee: Paul Venti

"Rahway State Prison inmate James Scott, brushing aside the blood from a cut on top of his head, stopped Richie Kates in the 10th round of their light heavyweight fight from the prison Saturday. Scott staggered Kates throughout the 10th and final round with a barrage of rights and lefts and referee Paul Venti stopped the bout at 1:32 of the round. Kates reopened a cut on top of Scott's head that the inmate originally sustained one month ago. The cut was reopened in the 2nd round and was bleeding profusely in the 3rd round. Dr. Ferdie Pacheco worked feverishly between the 3rd and 4th rounds to control the bleeding. Scott began to take control of the fight in the 4th round after Kates had almost floored him in the 3rd round. Scott nearly decked Kates with a relentless 30 second barrage at the beginning of the 7th, but Kates, of Vineland, N.J., managed to stay on his feet. Scott bolted from his corner at the beginning of the 10th. He forced Kates against the ropes and pounded away until Venti stopped the bout." -Associated Press

  • The cut Scott sustained in training was bad enough to cancel a scheduled bout with Jerry Celestine the previous month.
