"Featherweight champion Hogan (Kid) Bassey cracked Willie Pep's tricky defense with overhand rights to floor the two-time former king twice and earn a TKO at :42 seconds of the 9th round of a scheduled 10 round non-title bout tonight at the Garden. Wily Willie reached deep in his bag of tricks and embarrassed Bassey on many occasions before a crowd of 10,409. However, Pep's aging and much traveled legs grew weary and he couldn't last the route. Bassey was trailing on the cards of two officials when he found the range." -Associated Press
- Weights: Bassey - 128 1/4, Pep - 129
- Bassey's purse: $11,611.50
- Pep was cut over the left eye and suffered two minor ones on either side of his nose
