Joe Curran 107 lbs lost to Peter Kane 111 lbs by KO in round 11 of 15

  • Date: 1942-08-03
  • Location: Anfield Football Ground, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom
  • "Sgt. Peter Kane of Golbourne and the RAF, proved beyond all doubt that he is the logical contender for Jackie Paterson's British flyweight title, when he sensationally knocked out the brilliant Liverpool battler, Joe Curran, in the 11th of a 15-round contest at Anfield Football Grounds. Kane paved his way to the beating of Curran by his solid left leads and heavy right crosses that connected as Curran came forward to force the pace. In the 10th round Curran was forced to take two long counts and was saved from defeat by the gong. In the 11th round Kane again connected and had Curran at his mercy. Whilst taking another count the seconds of Curran threw in the towel, which was not accepted by the referee, who officially stated that Kane won by a KO." -Ring Magazine, November 1942 issue

    • The British Boxing Board of Control proclaimed that before allowing Kane to meet Jackie Paterson for the British flyweight title - which would also be for the vacant world flyweight title - he would have to meet Paddy Ryan of Manchester, which he did later in the year.
    • Kane had given up his world flyweight title in '39 and had been competing as a bantamweight since. This was his first flyweight contest since 1938.
    • Attendance was an unusually large 16,000. This was unusual due to restricted attendances due to World War II raging across Europe at the time.
