"Adolph Pruitt dropped rugged Charlie Shipes twice and went on to score a TKO at 2:02 of the 5th round of a scheduled 10 round welterweight bout Tuesday night. Pruitt, 142 3/4, dropped the heavier Shipes with a one-two combination for an automatic eight count in the 1st round and again with less than a minute gone in the 5th with a right cross and a vicious left hook for a nine count. Shipes, 147, took a terrible beating for the next minute and appeared to be out on his feet when referee Walter Cho halted the bout." -United Press International
