"Ken Buchanan of Scotland scored a 6th round TKO over Frankie Otero of Miami in their scheduled 10 round lightweight bout Thursday night. Buchanan scored the only knockdown of the fight when he decked Otero with a solid right hook late in the 1st round, although Otero jumped up at the count of two, as the round ended. The victory came after the 5th round when Otero's manager, Richard Riesgo, refused to allow his fighter to go out for the 6th round. Riesgo said after the fight he was afraid Otero might suffer serious injury from the heavy pounding he was taking from Buchanan's hard left and right hooks." -Canadian Press
- This bout was originally scheduled for Percy Hayles to defend his Commonwealth lightweight championship against Buchanan. Hayles, however, was injured in training and Otero substituted in a scheduled 10.
Post-fight comment
- "When we fought in Miami, I just couldn't eat and just didn't have punching power because of the heat. But here in the cooler weather I was much stronger and had much more power." -Ken Buchanan
