This bout was held eight miles from the city in Anoka County. Gilmore was seconded by John McGill; Needham was seconded by John H. Clark and Dick Moore. Gilmore was the more scientific but Needham hit harder. Needham usually did the leading with some rushes, while Gilmore fought a counter-punching fight. The bout was calm at times and active "in spells." Gilmore jolted Needham in round seventeen with an uppercut. By round twenty Gilmore's face showed some of the blows it had gotten, Needham's right eye was badly swollen.
