The two boxers fought a fast-paced first round, trading mostly left jabs; though Matthews attempted a big right hand that sailed over Basora's head. Early in the 2nd round, Matthews drove Basora into a corner and landed a left hook and right hand, that dropped Basora for a nine-count. Matthews then punched away at Basora for nearly a minute, before toppling him again with a right hand for a nine-count. In the 3rd round, Matthews focused his attack to Basora's body in the 3rd round, landing right hands to his chest; while Basora did land a couple right hands to the head of Matthews. In the 4th, Matthews came out and quickly smothered Basora with lefts and right, before flooring him for the third time in the bout with another right hand. Referee Eddie Volk immediately stopped the bout, stating that Basora "had become a punching bag".
