Ray Famechon 125 lbs beat Billy Spider Kelly 126 lbs by PTS in round 15 of 15

  • Date: 1955-05-27
  • Location: Donnybrook Bus Depot, Dublin, Ireland
  • Referee: Barend Bergstroem

"The European featherweight championship bout between Ray Famechon of France, and his challenger, Billy Kelly of Derry, Ireland, holder of the British and Empire crown, was staged before a record indoor gathering for Ireland in the Donnybrook Bus Station, converted for the occasion into an arena seating 6,750. The contest was won by a close margin by Famechon and the decision of referee Barend Bergstroem of Holland. Kelly lost the fight due to the continued aggressiveness from start to finish by Famechon. Several times Ray was jarred when one of Kelly's counter-blows landed on the jaw as the defending champion came tearing in, but Famechon carried the fight to his adversary, landed the harder punches, was the aggressor and because of that, he gained a hairline decision." -Ring Magazine, August 1955 issue

  • Official scorecard - 72-69 Famechon (referee Bergstroem was the sole official)
  • Unofficial Ring Magazine scorecard - 70-69 Famechon
  • Referee Bergstroem was assaulted in the ring after rendering his verdict. His assailant was promptly arrested.
