Nino Valdes 214 lbs beat Mike DeJohn 200 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

"Fifth-ranking Nino Valdes, slow at 214 pounds, was anything but impressive as he decisioned the left-hooking Mike DeJohn of Syracuse, NY, at Rochester's War Memorial Auditorium. Valdes, punishing DeJohn about the body from in close, hammered DeJohn to the canvas twice, in the 3rd and the 9th, but failed to finish him off in the manner a ranking challenger should. Each time DeJohn scrambled to his feet and belabored the Cuban with a raking left hook. Valdes was well ahead on points in the early rounds but tired noticeably and DeJohn came on in the middle rounds. Valdes shot the works in the 9th and 10th to grab the verdict by a single point." -United Press International

  • Unofficial AP (UPI did not report a card in this article) scorecard - 5-4-1 Valdes
  • Judge Leo Birnbaum's card actually read 5-5, but on NY's supplemental scoring he had Valdes winning 9-8.
