"Jimmy Heair of Memphis, the nation's No. 2 ranked junior welterweight, defeated 19 year old Jimmy Corkum of Boston with a 3rd round TKO Thursday night. The fight, halted at 1:21 of the 3rd round, marked the first time Corkum had been stopped. Heair, 26, opened a cut under Corkum's left eye in the 1st round and twice knocked the younger fighter down. Corkum, the No. 4 junior welterweight in the country, appeared stronger in the 2nd round but was staggered just before the bell. Corkum did his best boxing with a series of jabs in the 3rd round before Heair, a native of Houston, Miss., landed a right hook that further opened the cut and prompted the referee to stop the fight." -Associated Press
