- Referee Roger Tilleman was widely criticized for a clearly biased performance that heavily favored the hometown hero Ottke. After ignoring a knockdown in round 6 for Reid, instead ruling it a slip, Tilleman deducted a point from Reid for a phantom headbutt. Tilleman repeatedly warned Reid for initiating clinches when Ottke had charged in headfirst leaving him with no option but to hold. The referee also warned Reid on numerous occasions for landing clean punches. Reid was worried about being disqualified so couldn't box to the best of his ability. [1]
