This was the second fight of John L. Sullivan's tour of the Northeastern U.S. offering money to whoever dared get in the ring with him. McCarty (sometimes referred to as McCarthy) hailed from Baltimore and was considerably smaller than Sullivan, outweighed by twenty-five pounds. The fight did not last a round, with an early punch to the neck sending McCarty sprawling to the floor. Sullivan paid him fifty dollars for his short work.
