Don Fullmer 163 lbs drew with Billy Douglas 164 lbs by PTS in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1970-07-11
  • Location: Lausche Building, Columbus, Ohio, USA
  • "Billy 'Dynamite' Douglas, 164, and Don Fullmer, 163, traded hard jabs in a nip-and-tuck opening heat in front of 3,000 fans at the Lausch Building. In the 2nd round, Fullmer's stiff left hand opened up a cut under Douglas' left eye. Fullmer's busy left peppered the injured orb and closed it almost completely in the 3rd round. Douglas was virtually a one-eyed fighter and Fullmer took advantage of the injury to slip Douglas's jabs and pound home right hand counters to Billy's blindside ribs. Douglas rallied in the 5th and 6th, cutting Fullmer's right eye. Douglas pressed his advantage in the 7th, but Fullmer reopened the cut under Douglas' eye in the 8th and again Billy was sent back on the defensive. In the 10th, however, the fans screamed as the cold and calculating Douglas took control, hurting Fullmer with an uppercut and a tremendous right. Moments later Douglas floored Fullmer with another right for an official knockdown. Don was up at six but a series of lefts and rights put him down once again, barely beating the count with few hearing the bell ring." -Ring Magazine, November 1970 issue

    • Official scorecards after the bout - 97-96 and 99-93 both for Douglas. The third official voted 99-89 for Fullmer and it was announced as a split decision win for Douglas.
    • Fullmer's manager Angelo Curley appealed the decision to the Columbus Commission and 12 days later the Commission - attended by only 4 of their 7 members - changed the verdict to a draw.
    • Unofficial Ring Magazine scorecard - 95-94 Douglas
    • Purses: Fullmer - $4,000, Douglas - 30% of the gross over 6,500 ended up with only $250.
