"Jose Torres, declared the winner over Don Fullmer in a slow-starting scrap, was disappointed with his performance and demanded a return bout. Torres consistently beat Fullmer to the punch, particularly over the first seven rounds as he displayed a sharp head and body attack. When Fullmer started to rally in the 8th and 9th rounds, Torres stopped him short with a smashing left that sent him reeling into the ropes. There were no knockdowns but at the end Fullmer was bleeding from both nostrils and Torres had a slight cut on the bridge of his nose." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 6-3-1 Torres
- Under NJ rules, referee Joey Harrison was the sole arbiter.

- "I want to fight him again. I want to beat him the way I should. Fullmer is awkward and a tough guy to fight. If I fight him the same way I fought Florentino Fernandez I'll knock him out." -Jose Torres
