  • Canadian Heavyweight Title (2nd defense of Chuvalo)

Notes

  • Fight was stopped after Chase suffered a broken right hand.
  • First defense by Chuvalo of the title he had won 4 years earlier.

"Canadian heavyweight champion George Chuvalo, 225, retained his title Friday night when challenger Charlie Chase was unable to continue after the 6th round. Chase broke his right hand in the 4th round and fought for another two rounds before giving up. Chuvalo stalked Chase, 194 3/4, for much of the 6th round but Chase, of Montreal, counter-punched effectively and kept the Toronto champion off balance. Neither fighter was in serious trouble before the end came, although Chase was rocked in the 5th round by a hard right hand. Chase had a large swelling under his left eye and Chuvalo was cut slightly under the right eye, but there was no danger of the fight being stopped by these injuries." -Canadian Press

  • This bout was originally scheduled to take place ca. May/June of 1970 in Edmonton. However, a week before the bout Chase pulled out claiming an eye cut in training. He did not ask for a postponement, but simply canceled his participation, which cost the promoters $5,000 on the promotion.
  • Also on this card Clyde Gray fought Lonnie States and Muhammad Ali fought two 5-round exhibitions. One with Jimmy Summerville and one with Jeff Merritt.
  • Attendance - 9,824
