  • "Chico Vejar, University Freshman and welterweight rookie, passed his 'big time' examination tonight by winning a unanimous 10-round decision over veteran Enrique Bolanos of Los Angeles, at MSG. Vejar, scaling 146 1/2 to Bolanos' 143, weakened the California Mexican with body shots in the early rounds and then tried to knock him out with a head attack. But Bolanos proved rugged and was fighting back better in the latter rounds - when hurt - than he had been in the early or mid-going. Bolanos, former lightweight contender, who appeared somewhat corpulent as a welterweight, could not get underway against the speedy youngster from Connecticut, who kept smashing him in the body with lefts and rights. Bolanos' best round was the 7th in which he gave Vejar a drubbing and brought blood to his nose. Bolanos also gave Chico stern opposition in the 9th and 10th and gashed Vejar under the left eye in the 8th. There were no knockdowns." -United Press

    • Garden matchmaker Al Weill promised Vejar a late February date in the Garden against either Jimmy Carter, Art Aragon or Paddy DeMarco. Although Weill failed to deliver any of those three, he did sign Vejar to two main events in the arena in February against Johnny (Red) DeFazio and Fitzie Pruden.
