"Ernie Terrell, winning his fifth successive victory in a comeback after a three-year layoff, won a unanimous 10-round decision over Brazilian Luis Faustino Pires. Terrell, 219, stunned the game Pires several times but was unable to put him away in a wild-swinging contest in Chicago. Terrell employed his great reach advantage to keep Pires off-balance in the bout which was marred by considerable pushing and clinching. Terrell rocked Pires with two solid rights to the jaw near the end of the 3rd round but was unable to follow through. Pires, 215, had his two best rounds in the 6th and 7th when he connected late in each stanza with looping rights and lefts. Terrell again staggered his opponent with a left-right combo late in the 9th in which Pires started bleeding badly from a cut inside the mouth. But again, Terrell was unable to move in for the kill." -Associated Press
