Fitzgerald boxed well for five rounds. In the sixth, Duran pinned him to the ropes and hit him with a left hook to the chin. Fitzgerald subsequently dropped his hands, took a barrage of punches, and fell to the canvas. He was unable to beat referee Chester Comeaux's count.

Commentator Steve Albert remarked that Duran was "likely behind on points" before the dramatic knockout. Fellow commentator Sean O'Grady replied, "Absolutely. I had given every round to Sean Fitzgerald."

Fitzgerald later said, “I was doing very well, but just ran out of gas. I have nobody but myself to blame for that.”
