"European heavyweight champion Dick Richardson of Britain knocked out Germany's Karl Mildenberger in the 1st round of a scheduled 15 rounder here Saturday night to retain his title. The end came for the youthful German southpaw 2:10 after the fight started before a sell-out crowd of 16,000 in the Dortmund Westfalen Hall. A right hook flashed to Mildenberger's main artery felled him like a tree. The German did not move for two minutes. French referee Philipe de Backer announced Richardson the old and new champion as the German was still on the floor. Richardson is virtually assured of a big money earning bout against Sweden's Ingemar Johansson, who vacated the European title when he went after the world crown." -Associated Press
- As stated in the article, Richardson did sign to defend his European heavyweight title against Johansson. The defense took place 4 months after this bout.
