According to the New York Times, Lesnevich hurt Mauriello in the 2nd, 3rd, and 8th rounds. Lesnevich began to tire in the 12th round.
"The smart money boys of 49th street were calling Gus Lesnevich of Cliffside, N.J. the 'reluctant lion' for failing to knock out young Tami Mauriello of the Bronx Friday night instead of merely hammering out a 15-round decision in which Mauriello was outclassed completely. Lesnevich staggered Tami in the 1st round with a jolting right to the head and then continued with his boxing lesson. In the 2nd round, Lesnevich hit the challenger with a straight right on the chin that spun him across the ring. But Tami didn't touch canvas for a knockdown. In fact, there were no knockdowns in the fight. Again in the 3rd Lesnevich landed a straight right that rocketed Mauriello into the ropes. In both rounds Gus failed to swarm over his man. Lesnevich was just too methodical and waited too long. The decision was unanimous." -United Press
- Unofficial UP scorecard - 9-5-1 Lesnevich
- Garden promoter Mike Jacobs announced that Lesnevich would make his next defense against the winner of the upcoming Ken Overlin v Al Hostak bout, which was won by Overlin. However, the bout never came off. Possibly due to the U.S. entering World War II with the attack on Pearl Harbor just several weeks away. Lesnevich did not defend his title again until 1946.
