The boxers set a fast pace for eight rounds with Zepeda slighly getting the better of the exchanges. Both fighters were cut and swollen after 8 rds with the ringside doctor checking both corners making sure each man was fit to continue. The referee stopped the fight in the 9th round and ruled an accidental headbutt as Zepeda was badly cut beneath his right eye. The doctor checked it and advised the contest be terminated. However, the TV replay showed the cut was caused by an uppercut.
