"Kenny Lane finally has recognition as world lightweight champion, if only in the 58,266 square miles of Michigan, and he's anxious to fight Carlos Ortiz anywhere for the title covering the rest of the globe. Lane won the Michigan version of the lightweight championship by outpointing Paul Armstead of Los Angeles in a unanimous 15 round decision last night." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 145-144 Lane
- Due to what they felt was Carlos Ortiz giving Kenny Lane the runaround in a bid for a title fight, the state of Michigan withdrew from the WBA and sanctioned this bout for the vacant world lightweight title.
- The WBA then stripped Carlos Ortiz of his lightweight championship in June for failure to defend, but restored the championship on Sunday with the stipulation that Ortiz sign to fight the winner of Lane v Armstead by the end of the year.
