"Kenny Lane of Muskegon, Mich., scored a 9th round TKO over Len Matthews of Philadelphia in a nationally televised bout Saturday night to even an old score and boost his bid for a title shot against lightweight champion Carlos Ortiz. The 30 year old Lane, a cut-eye TKO victim of Matthews in their previous meeting two years ago, slit his younger opponent's left eye and pounded it nearly shut to force referee Joe Sweeney to intervene. The referee halted the one-sided contest at 2:54 of the session with Matthews taking a severe pummeling from the southpaw from Michigan." -United Press International
