Jack Roper vs. Junior Munsell (1st meeting)
Jack Roper 194 lbs beat Junior Munsell 185 lbs by PTS in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1939-02-10
- Location: Legion Stadium, Hollywood, California, USA
- Referee: Charley Randolph
"The Raonoke, VA., veteran won every round from Munsell and chased him continuously throughout while a capacity crowd house was in an uproar. Roper floored his Indian opponent in the fourth for a count of eleven by the timekeeper's watch, but Referee Charley Randolph permitted Munsell to continue the fight. In the fifth round, Roper connected and dropped the Oklahoman, this time for a seven count. Munsell spent the remaining five rounds backpedalling and not attempting to fight. Munsell failed to score a single punishing blow and fell far short of his reputation of knocking out 35 of his last 47 opponents. Roper took the first three rounds handily, but was unable to land his stinging left until the fourth. Munsell went down and was on one knee when the count teached ten and then eleven. Randolph merely waved the Virginian away and then told the boxers to continue. The fans threatened to climb in the ring, but were quited." (Nevada State Journal)
