Bob Baker 229 lbs beat Billy Gilliam 210 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1952-10-28
  • Location: Flamingo Arena, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
  • Referee: Buck McTiernan

"Bob Baker of Pittsburgh, who has been sidelined nearly a year because of injuries to his right hand, lumbered his way to a unanimous 10 round decision over Billy Gilliam of Orange, NJ, tonight - and in so doing reinjured the hand. Baker won the decision in a hard-fought but slow battle. The Pittsburgh heavyweight had all he could handle in Gilliam and had to come from behind in the final five rounds. There wasn't a semblance of a knockdown. Gilliam was troubled from the 2nd round on by a bleeding nose and Baker suffered a cut on top of his left eyelid in the 4th. Baker appeared to be favouring his right hand and after the 7th round hardly used it at all." -Associated Press

  • Although X-Rays were ordered on Baker's hand for the following day, damage is assumed to have been minimal as he rematched Gilliam five weeks later.
