This was the first round of Tex Rickard's heavyweight elimination process to select an opponent for Gene Tunney in 1928.
Renault weighed 19 1/2 pounds more than Delaney. Delaney had been dropped by a right hand in the second round. Renault suffered a broken nose in the fourth round from an uppercut when he broke from a clinch; his face was a gory mask from the fourth round to the eighth. Renault worked Delaney to the body, but could not overcome Delaney's lead at long-range work.
