"Years of experience in the roped arena served Mike McTigue well here last night when the former light heavyweight champion boxed a 10 round draw with Larry Gains, Canadian heavyweight titleholder. Gains had McTigue hanging on the ropes for support in the 2nd round with a furious attack of left hooks to the head, and in the next canto opened a gash over McTigue's eye. The wound bled profusely, blinding Mike, but he fought it out toe to toe and by the time the 6th round came McTigue was starting reprisals which continued to the finish, warranting him a draw in the opinion of the judges." -Associated Press

According to one paper "If the opinion of the crowd mattered, Gains was an easy winner."

• McTigue had been under suspension by the NBA for failure to go through with an earlier scheduled match with Gains on May 16, 1927. Also scheduled for Toronto.
